1993 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Group A

Thoughout the early ninties, Mitsubishi was quite sucessful with their rally-prepared Gallant. The car was driven to six WRC victories in 1992 before being replaced by the Lancer Evolution. It was this car, the Lancer Evolution, that would eventually bring more success to the Mitsubishi name. Through several evolutions of their racecar, Mitsubishi campaigned purpose-built Lancers at the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship and the World Rally Championship.

Being both smaller and lighter than the Gallant, the Lancer lended itself better to the track with superior turning characteristics. Unlike the Gallant, the Lancer Evolution was a car created specifically for rally competition. Even the road-going counterpart of the Evolution used the same engine and aerodynamics package as the rally car.

Ralliart was responsible for the production and techincal devlopment of the rally cars. The have produced Mitsubishi Motorsport products for over thirty years. Specifically, they have devleoped Mitsubishi’s rally efforts which started in the sixites.

Lancers participated in the 1993 WRC season from round one at Monte Carlo. During that race Kenneth Eriksson and Armin Schwarz drove to fourth and sixth overall. Unfortunately, the rest of the 1993 season was mixed bag for Mitsubishi. The Team achieved a number of podium positions which was quite respectable for their new platform.

The following year, a new Evolution II was released which was based upon lessons learned at the 1993 season.
